CBD can be derived from both the hemp and marijuana plant, which are the same species. However, CBD products are only federally legal if they’re derived from the hemp plant as the hemp plant contains up to 0.3% THC and is nonpsychoactive, so it won’t get users high. Although CBD is technically legal at the federal level, some states have their own mandates and guidelines restricting the growth and usage of hemp. Cannabigerol or CBG is also federally legal if it is sourced from hemp plants containting up to 0.3% THC.

Now they’re seeing the fruits of their labor come to life on their own farm.

LANCASTER, Ohio — Seven family members in Lancaster recently have come together with one purpose, to bring CBD and CBG to Ohioans.

Hemp-derived CBD and CBG products are legal in Ohio.

“Many people have experienced benefits from using CBD products made from hemp,” said Alexander Jones. “However, many products are not approved by the FDA yet.”

Wilde Honey Farms currently grows seven different hemp varieties of CBD and CBG. The Jones’ planted everything by hand.

“A lot of backbreaking days, every day for hours and hours and hours coming out here and planting, coming through and de-vining, pulling weeds and weed whacking,” said Drew Jones.

“We’re all Jones’, we’re all related,” said John Jones. “All family members are partners in the organization. So we’re all equal.”

State officials then test the fields for THC levels prior to harvest to ensure they’re under the 0.3% federal limit. If plants test under that limit, farmers have the green light to harvest.

However, many hemp farmers that grow for grain and fiber — as most in South Dakota do — argue that it could be helpful if the two were separated. But that’s up to federal officials, not state ones.

Prospective hemp growers of all kinds must obtain an industrial hemp license from the state. The applicant, key participants and landowner must also pass both state and federal background checks, according to the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

The input costs are also much higher, as CBD hemp seeds cost about Growing hemp for its fiber/grain and for CBD are wildly different, according to previous reporting by the Argus Leader..50 to $1 per seed. Hemp grown for CBD is also more likely to test hot when it comes to THC, making it a bigger gamble than grain/fiber.

Grain and fiber plants are grown similarly to wheat and planted densely at about 750,000 seeds per acre, said Derek Dohmann, a sales manager for Horizon Hemp Seeds in Willow Lake, South Dakota.

Is growing hemp for fiber and hemp for CBD the same?

Legally, hemp is a plant that contains 0.3% or less of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), according to the Purdue University Hemp Project. Marijuana, on the other hand, has a higher percentage of the psychoactive compound that produces a “high” sensation.

If over the limit, the crops are burned, resulting in a total loss because no crop insurance is available in South Dakota. As of early October, no fields tested have gone over the limit, Derek Schiefelbein, the DANR industrial hemp program manager, said.
