Just like the 300 and 600 mg products, most 1,000mg hemp oils come in a 30 mL bottle. A single 20-drop serving equates to a CBD dose of approximately 33.3mg. In most instances, users won’t have much use for a higher-strength product than this. Here’s a basic table summarizing which CBD oil strength may be best for you:

Still, though, even for people with a higher than average BMI, we recommend starting with a relatively low dose before increasing if necessary.

Here are a few things to consider when asking yourself, ‘what CBD oil should I buy?’

What CBD Oil Should I Buy?

It is recommended you start with a low potency product first, at least until you gauge how your body reacts to the CBD. Because everybody’s biochemistry is different, not everyone will react the same or get the same therapeutic effects from CBD oil or other CBD products.

With this in mind, none of the information we provide here in this article should be interpreted as medical advice. If at all possible, arrange an appointment to speak with a healthcare professional about the proper use and dosing of CBD oil.

Potency Options

Here is a quick rundown of three common CBD oil potencies, and what the majority of people use them for.

If shopping online, be sure to go to the CBD product page of the brand’s website to learn more about the different CBD oils they have on offer.

Full-spectrum CBD extract is made from the entire hemp plant and contains the plant's full range of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. These compounds work synergistically to maximize the benefits for your body in what's known as the entourage effect.

Similar to full-spectrum, broad-spectrum CBD contains a wide range of hemp-derived cannabinoids and terpenes beyond CBD. The primary difference is that broad-spectrum CBD is processed further to remove THC content. These oils offer many of the benefits of full-spectrum products, without the THC.

Joy Organics infuses broad-spectrum CBD oil in a blend of organic olive oil for a potent formula designed to melt away stress and help you relax at night. This USDA organic oil contains 0% THC, is cruelty-free and is certified by the U.S. Hemp Roundtable. It’s available in four different strengths, including 45 and 75 milligrams of CBD per one milliliter dropper for a stronger dose. Joy Organics conducts both in-house testing and has all products tested by independent labs including Stillwater Laboratory, Pixis Labs, and Green Scientific Labs.

Note that full spectrum CBD products are legally allowed to contain up to 0.3% of the psychoactive cannabinoid THC. This low concentration won't get you high, but it might still show up on a drug test.

Why does CBD potency matter?

We examined research on the safety and efficacy of high CBD concentrations and compared popular CBD brands to compile this list of the eight strongest CBD oils for 2022. Below, you can read about each product to learn more about its CBD concentration, ingredients list, and use instructions to determine which ones may be the best fit for your health goals.

All credible CBD companies will share a certificate of analysis (COA) on their website. This is a record of third-party testing performed by independent organizations for every batch of CBD. It shares details from the lab test results about the extract's potency and precise cannabinoid composition and will confirm whether it is free of unwanted contaminants, such as pesticides or heavy metals. A CoA affirms that a CBD company has nothing to hide, so consider shopping elsewhere if it's not readily available.

Most CBD extracts today fall into one of three categories. Each offers a different concentration of beneficial cannabinoids and will have slightly different effects.

Understanding full-spectrum vs. broad-spectrum vs. CBD isolate

It’s hard to beat Medterra’s CBD isolate tincture if you’re looking for pure CBD without THC. The brand’s CO2 extraction process removes 100% of the THC, so you’re left with a 99.6% pure CBD extract blended with MCT oil for easier absorption. At 100 milligrams of CBD per one milliliter dropper, the 3,000 milligram concentration is the strongest THC-free option on our list. Medterra uses hemp grown according to the Kentucky Department of Agriculture organic farming practice requirements, and all products are tested by third-party labs including Sante Laboratories and Green Scientific Labs.

Those who want to maximize their CBD supplement routine can choose Charlotte’s Web maximum strength oil, which offers 60 milligrams of CBD per serving. Best of all, this oil comes in three appealing flavors: Mint Chocolate, Lemon Twist, and Orange Blossom. This is a great CBD oil for supporting healthy sleep habits and managing stress. Charlotte’s Web uses Eurofins Food Chemistry Testing to ensure the purity of its CBD.

MTS and crystal violet assay kits were obtained from Promega (cat. no. G3581, Madison, WI, USA) and Fisher Scientific (cat. no. C581, Waltham, MA, USA) and performed according to manufacturers’ protocols. MTS signals were detected with a multimode microplate reader (Synergy 2, BioTek, Winooski, VT, USA). Cell density following crystal violet staining was examined with a standard cell culture microscope equipped with a digital camera. All MTS and crystal violet assays were performed in triplicate, and duplicate experiments were performed per treatment condition, producing six repeated measurements per treatment condition.

We further evaluated the effects of isolated CBD and CBD oils on the signaling activity of the pI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway, which is critical for the regulation of neuronal cell growth, longevity, and energy metabolism [28,29]. The expression levels of the phosphoisoforms of Akt, mTOR, and p70S6K were used to monitor the activity of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway. To minimize cytotoxicity, SH-SY5Y cells were treated with 6.25 µg/mL isolated CBD or 100 µg/mL CBD oils for 24 h prior to the collection of cell lysates for analysis. Akt phosphoisoforms were detected with cIEF immunoassays using primary antibodies against Akt1 isoforms, Akt2 isoforms, Akt3 isoforms, pan-Akt, or all Akt isoforms. Peak assignment of Akt isoforms on the electropherograms was based on the experimental data herein ( Figure 3 A), as well as on previously published data from multiple independent research groups [15,17]. In SH-SY5Y cells, the Akt3 isoforms were the dominant isoforms, accounting for 50%, followed by Akt1 isoforms at 40% and Akt2 isoforms at 10% ( Figure 3 A). Treatment of SH-SY5Y cells with isolated CBD and CBD oils generally reduced the expression of Akt phosphoisoforms, with the strongest suppressive effects induced by CBD oil V1 ( Figure 3 B and Supplemental Figures S1 and S2). Treatment of SH-SY5Y cells with CBD oil V1 strongly reduced the phosphorylation of mTOR at residue Ser2448 and of p70S6K at residue Thr389, which occur downstream of Akt, as detected with capillary Western immunoassays ( Figure 3 C). In contrast, isolated CBD and other CBD oils had either undetectable or weak suppressive effects on mTOR and p70S6K phosphorylation. Fold changes of protein phosphoisoforms after treatment, as compared with the control, were calculated to the yield the relative concentrations of individual signaling proteins. Quantitative analysis data further revealed strong, consistent, and statistically significant effects of CBD oil V1 on the reduction in the protein phosphoisoforms in the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling cascade ( Figure 3 D).

2.6. Treatment Condition

The terpene profiles of CBD oils were analyzed using a GC-MS method described previously [14]. In addition, GC-MS experimental parameters are listed on the laboratory reports of terpene profiles from APRC in the Supplementary Materials.

2.14. Sample Availability

Notably, nanofluidic protein PTM profiling proved to be a convenient and rapid means to assess the effects of CBD oils on neuronal signaling pathways. The PTM profiles of multiple proteins within a signaling cascade served as read-outs for CBD oil signaling activity and the associated functions. By measuring the expression and phosphorylation of a diagnostic panel of 26 proteins, we were able to assess the effects of CBD oils on the activities of nine signaling pathways critical for the regulation of neuronal functions. We reported that CBD oils downregulated seven signaling pathways that participate in metabolism, differentiation, immunity, memory, and cell death but had no effect on the other two pathways that regulate proliferation and synaptic plasticity. The suppressive effects of CBD oils on neuronal signaling pathways were slow acting, with a timescale of hours, and reached maximal suppression at 24 h post-treatment. The biological effects of CBD oils presented in this study could provide insights into the mechanisms underlying their purported benefits on relieving pain and anxiety [32]. Most significantly, nanofluidic protein PTM profiling provided a biochemical approach to differentiate CBD oils. It is plausible that the effects on cell signaling pathways could serve as a complementary determinant of potency for CBD oils.
