About the Bubble Gum Strain

Background

To understand the history of Bubblegum seeds, we need to go way back to the early ‘90s.

During the heyday of cannabis cultivation, growers were forced underground if they wanted to continue their trade. It was these founders that crafted the backbone genetics that all hybrid strains are made of today.

In Indiana, USA, growers became accustomed to a new strain making waves in the close-knit community. The strain was dubbed Indiana BG — short for Indiana Bubblegum due to its audaciously sweet flavor and aroma.

Unlike most weed of that era, Indiana Bubble Gum was insanely flavorful, loaded with resin, and easy to grow. Therefore, cultivators in Indiana only grew Indiana Bubblegum seeds and left everything else by the wayside.

However, it wasn’t until Dutch cannabis enthusiasts discovered Indiana Bubble Gum seeds that it went from a local favorite to a worldwide phenomenon.

The breeders at Serious Seeds worked on the Indiana Bubble Gum line and inbred it until it was stable. Once stable, Serious Seeds released their iteration of Bubble Gum to the public.

Now, you can enjoy this fabled strain in the form of Feminized Bubble Gum seeds.

Growing Bubble Gum Seeds

Although newer marijuana strains are exciting to grow — there’s nothing like growing a stable variety.

For example, Feminized Bubble Gum seeds are less sensitive than untested genetics. In other words, Bubble Gum is less likely to hermie during the flowering stage.

Therefore, growing Bubblegum is an excellent idea when you need reliable weed. Whether your indoor or outdoor setup isn’t up to snuff or you want to avoid any issues down the road, Bubble Gum is one of those few strains that push on when the going gets tough.

Lastly, don’t assume that Bubble Gum is only meant for growers that need bullet-proof weed. Instead, there’s a reason why Bubble Gum has taken home armfuls of awards around the world.

Below, you’ll find all the information you need to grow the best Bubble Gum buds in your indoor or outdoor garden.

Grow Difficulty

The Bubblegum strain is easy to grow, making it perfect for beginners needing a forgiving variety.

Therefore, aspects such as feeding are standard and don’t require extensive fine-tuning. In other words, standard doses of plant nutrients suffice and produce healthy Bubble Gum plants.

Additionally, Bubble Gum’s stability is a key benefit for beginners and professionals. Considering hermies aren’t a common worry during the flowering period, cultivators can focus on other aspects of growing a successful crop of Bubblegum weed.

Lastly, Bubble Gum is easy to train. From SOG to LST, cultivators will have an easy time manipulating Bubblegum plants for the best possible yield.

Optimal Growing Conditions and Climate

Although the original Bubble Gum strain hails from Indiana, it’s best to provide a Mediterranean-like climate for the best results.

Therefore, outdoor growers must provide adequate sunshine, warmth, and low humidity during the prime growing season. Remember, your Bubblegum plants must be ready for harvest before the frigid temperatures of autumn arrive.

If you grow Feminized Bubblegum seeds indoors — you must keep the temperature range between 77-88F. Although the temperature can fluctuate above or below this range, the best buds are produced in a comfortable climate.

Additionally, do not let humidity exceed 70% during the flowering stage. As long as you maintain an adequate climate — you’ll be in for an epic harvest!

Flowering time

The Bubble Gum strain flowers in 7-9-weeks.

Ultimately, the holy grail phenotype to watch out for is the fast finisher at 49-days. However, all phenotypes of Bubble Gum produce stellar buds that taste and smell exactly like sweet bubblegum.

However, indoor growers are likely to harvest their crop within 7-8-weeks due to the ideal climate. On the other hand, outdoor growers should expect to pull down their Bubble Gum plants by the end of September or October.

Yield

The yield of the Bubble Gum strain is why cultivators come back for more year after year.

As if you could ever have enough bubblegum — the Bubble Gum strain is known as a heavy yielder that’ll make you feel like the ultimate green thumb. Indoors, Bubble Gum plants unload up to 600g/m2 when appropriately trained.

Outdoors, Feminized Bubble Gum plants are liable to pump out up to 500-grams per plant. Therefore, you’ll be swimming in Bubble Gum weed for months whether you grow indoors or outdoors.

Height

One of the best aspects of the Bubble Gum strain is its height.

At 100-120cm, the Bubble Gum strain is optimized for most locations. Whether you grow weed in a closet or a massive backyard, the Bubble Gum plant’s height will suit your needs.

Remember, decreasing the length of the veg cycle will naturally reduce the height of the plants. Alternatively, training or topping the Bubble Gum plants will keep their size down to a manageable level.

Therefore, top early and often if you require small cannabis plants!

Resistance to Pests and Diseases

Bubble Gum plants offer moderate resistance to pests and diseases.

Therefore, you need to pay special attention to the humidity in your grow room or local environment. Remember, elevated moisture content leads to the proliferation of pests and diseases — especially mold.

Therefore, a solid IPM program is essential to protecting your beloved Bubble Gum plants. The best practices to ensure the health of your Bubble Gum plants are:

  • Remove the lowest growth (lollipop)
  • Add one oscillating fan per meter squared
  • Adequately space each plant
  • Keep your garden clean
  • Always wear clean clothes into the grow room
  • Apply organic neem oil during the vegetative stage
  • Monitor your crop daily

Bubble Gum Strain Description and Properties

The Appearance of Bubblegum Weed

You might faint the first time you see Bubble Gum weed — it’s that good.

The frost content is so heavy that you won’t be able to see what’s underneath. However, once you break up the dense buds, you’ll find perfectly shaped calyxes and electric orange pistils that’ll make your mouth water.

Bubble Gum Strain Description

Legendary for its bubblegum sweet smell and euphoric high the Bubble Gum strain grows into a medium tall plant, usually not too branchy (sometimes tall) and produces compact, crystal covered buds. Plants grown from seeds are very similar to one another.

Originally the Bubblegum strain was developed by growers in Indiana, USA. Later those original genetics came to the Netherlands and were given to two different seed companies. Each created their own ‘original Bubble Gum strain’ from that genetic material. The Serious Seeds Bubble Gum is more sativa like in looks and effect, a sturdy and strong plant, with the characteristic, sweet smell (truly resembling a typical bubble gum taste) and euphoric high; the original trademarks of this famous strain. The only inbred strain (not a F1 hybrid) on the Serious menu.

Bubble Gum has won 13 awards in High Times Cannabis Cups and similar festivals. In 2004 and 2005 it won 5 local and national Cups in Spain alone! In 2006 the Bubble Gum received its best award; it was named ‘Plant of the year’ by magazine ‘Soft Secrets’, because many Spanish growers won in local competitions in that year with the same plant: Bubble Gum. In September 2016 the feminized seeds of Bubble Gum have won the third place in the category Sativa at the Expogrow-Cup 2016 in Irun, Spain.

The legendary sweet strawberry flavor of this variety is well pronounced in plants grown from feminized seeds! The Bubble Gum is the motherplant of the legendary Strawberry-Banana produced by Crockett Family Farms. In November 2018 an extract from Bubble Gum made by Nectars Collective has won the FIRST place in the category Hybrids at the 4th annual Jack Herer-Cup in Las Vegas, USA.

Bubble Gum Grow Report by G.B.I.

Serious Seeds Bubble Gum – a “seriously” refined classic

Text & Photos: Green Born Identity – G.B.I.

There are several strains out in the world of cannabis genetics whose origin and further breeding process seem to be unclear. Growers get especially confused, when a certain strain is offered under the same name by two or more seed banks: who has the original one, whose are copies? The Bubblegum strain is such one contentious strain, of which at least two seed banks do offer their own versions, in this case Serious Seeds and T.H. Seeds (both residing in Amsterdam), not to mention all those internet-based criminal copy cats here. So I decided to trace back the real roots of Bubble Gum. Asking both the above-mentioned breeders resulted in two corresponding versions of the Bubble Gum`s breeding story, giving good reasons for the existence of two high-quality Bubble Gum strains: The original material was developed by a grower in Indiana (USA) during the 80ies. In 1993, this guy gave three very different female Bubble Gum plants to Adam from T.H. Sees as well as to Simon and Tony (the two splitted up shortly after, with Simon founding Serious Seeds and Tony Sagarmatha Seeds) from Cerebral Seeds. So Bubble Gum arrived in the Netherlands in the hands of three breeders. And from that moment on, different new chapters were written in the breeding history of Bubble Gum, its development kind of branched out. Three breeders – three ways of breeding: These seed meisters were going to make their own special selection out of the three different genetic types they had received. Simon reports: “As far as I know, T.H. Seeds did work further with another of those 3 plants than I did”. That`s the reason why Adam (T.H. Seeds` BG will be another story…) considers his Bubble Gum as “mostly indica”, whereas Simon puts his version into the “Mostly Sativa” category. He focused his research on two of the three lines, finally deciding for one type that should become his Bubble Gum seed strain. It took Simon five generations to end up in the desired breeding result, officially registering it then as “Bubble Gum”. He says that it is not possible to give exact sativa/indica percentages, but reveals that the genetic background of Bubble Gum consists of three different exotic sativas, amongst them Mexican and Columbian, and an Afghani indica. It is remarkable that Bubble Gum is the only inbred strain (no F1 hybrid) in the Serious menu, thus being especially uniform. Upon being asked about special considerations to Bubble Gum, Simon explained: “The bubble gum shows a remarkable uniformity in plants grown from seeds. It is a strong and beautiful plant which grows a heavy stem, you never need to tie heavy buds up. The initial stages of seedlings can be tender, and you have to take care a bit for them in that stage. It is important to not let them be overgrown by neighbouring plants which may grow faster at first. Once when about 2 weeks old, the Bubble Gums will start to pick up speed and grow as fast as other plants.” This delay in growth can be explained by the fact that the BG is an inbred strain and therefore does not have that hybrid vigour effect (faster and stronger growth) of F1 hybrids.

Keeping these hints in mind, I sow four BG seeds – only four seeds, due to the chronic congestion on my seed testing list. They really showed off the ground one day later than common, but germinated properly and simultaneously. And in fact, the overall growth speed was slow at first, but increased significantly after two weeks. When the multiple-finger leafs had been formed, their look was quite unsual: dark green in the colour (indica trait), but at the same time rather narrow and sharply serrated (sativa traits). After five weeks from germination, they had grown into medium tall plants (55-65 cm) under HPS 400 + 250 W, with few side-branching. But due to the dominating sativa content, it was clear that they would further stretch during flowering. Two plants turned out to be female and soon developed the first flower clusters after having turned the lights to 12/12. And one could quickly realize that huge top colas were about to be produced by the plants. After four weeks of flowering, the buds began to release a sweet fruity scent that was going to become more intensive from week to week, really reminding of fruity chewing gum. Also resin production had gotten into full speed, conquering more and more of the plants` surface. The buds grew into very compact resinous heads, featuring a high calyx-to-leaf ratio, thus allowing for easy harvest processing. After 58 resp. 61 days of flowering, harvest was not only easy, but also rewarding, as the two BG plants yielded 25 resp. 28 grams of finest sticky sinsemilla. As expected, they had kept on growing vertically during flowering, finally amounting to 91 resp. 102 cm. But this contributed to the formation of long-drawn, heavy yielding main colas.

The buds were pleasantly mild to smoke and had preserved some of that special fruitiness also after the drying process. No surprise that the high delivered a pretty strong sativa power dosage, with euphoric tendencies, at least it will make you blow some funny fantasy bubbles in your mind. The indica aspect, however, is also noticeable, causing a certain degree of stonedness, too. This nice mixture of both sides of the spectrum makes Serious Seeds` Bubble Gum an attractive experience, and accordingly, it has won several awards, e.g. at the High Times Cannabis Cup 1994, 1995 and 1999. It may be new to some that Bubble Gum is also a good choice for outdoor cultivation. While rather taking place on the balcony in Holland, it is also successfully practised in the great Spanish outdoors, as Simon reports:

“Bubble Gum is also liked for outdoors in Spain a lot, it will also form a very nice plant with moult resistence buds when grown outdoors here but just finishes not soon enough for my standards to call it an outdoor plant. Normal finishing date 1-15 oct.” On the whole, Serious Seeds` Bubble Gum is a very worthwhile strain to grow – indeed a “seriously” refined classic. 63 Euros for 10 seeds are certainly a good investment.
